This is a Post version of a web-site (not public. . . yet) that I designed, including the Basic JS Roman Numeral Converter machine. I will be adding a Roman Numeral Converter widget to the sidebar! (sorry for the bad presentation - I'll try to fix some things.)

About and How To

This converter is made to be used as a Roman Numeral Converting SHORTCUT. Its intended users are expected to already be sufficiently versed in Roman Numerals to input correct symbols and pairs. The converter will not catch mis-structured numbers, and will output based upon its SIMPLE algorithm.

An advanced converter, along with a succinct set of instructions, is available at www.onlineconversion.com.

Their converter is advanced in that it will return an error if you input improperly written numerals. It is also limited to numbers less than and not equal to 5,000. (Our basic converter has no limit, unless you cound getting tired of typing, or your computer can't handle it!)

Accepted "digits"

A list of the Roman Numeral Digits our machine recognizes:

M = 1000
D = 500
C = 100
L = 50
X = 10
V = 5
I = 1

Basics (from onlinveconversion.com)

"A smaller number in front of a larger number means subtraction, all else means addition. For example, IV means 4, VI means 6.

You would not put more than one smaller number in front of a larger number to subtract. For example, IIV would not mean 3.

You must separate ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands as separate items. That means that 99 is XCIX, 90 + 9, but never should be written as IC. Similarly, 999 cannot be IM and 1999 cannot be MIM."
